Workers' Compensation Physical Therapy

Getting injured workers back to the job safely.

Work Injuries We Treat

A work injury affects more than your body. It affects your income, your employer’s staffing, and a claim with real deadlines attached. We provide authorized workers’ compensation physical therapy at our Totowa and Nutley clinics, and we treat orthopedic and musculoskeletal injuries exclusively.

  • Back and neck injuries from lifting, twisting, or repetitive strain
  • Shoulder injuries, including rotator cuff tears and impingement
  • Knee injuries from falls, kneeling, or repetitive load
  • Wrist, hand, and elbow conditions, including carpal tunnel and tendinitis
  • Sprains, strains, and soft tissue injuries
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation following an authorized work-related procedure
  • Spine injuries, including herniated discs
  • Slip and fall injuries occurring on the job

How Treatment Works in a New Jersey Comp Case

In New Jersey, the employer or their workers’ compensation carrier directs medical care. Treatment is authorized through your employer, the carrier, or the adjuster handling your claim, and your authorized treating physician writes the prescription for physical therapy.

Once therapy is authorized, we handle the rest. Our staff coordinates directly with the adjuster or nurse case manager on authorization and billing, so you are not managing paperwork while you are trying to recover.

If you are an injured worker: ask your treating physician or adjuster whether Expert Rehabilitation Group can be authorized for your therapy. You are welcome to call us at (973) 221-5236 with questions about the process.

What We Provide

Doctor-level evaluation. Every patient is evaluated and treated by a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy — Dr. Sheldon Shterengarts in Totowa and Dr. Roger Avecillas in Nutley — not handed off to an aide.

Objective, timely documentation. We record objective measures at each visit — range of motion, strength grading, and functional testing — and provide evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries to the treating physician, adjuster, or case manager without chasing.

Return-to-work focus. We build treatment around the physical demands of the patient’s work and communicate clearly about functional progress.

Continuity. Patients see the same therapist throughout their plan of care, which produces better outcomes and a coherent treatment record.

Scheduling that fits a working patient. Both clinics offer evening appointments and free on-site parking.

For Adjusters, Case Managers, and Employers

If you are placing a patient in Passaic, Essex, Bergen, or Morris County, we are glad to discuss how we work.

We provide prompt evaluations, objective progress reporting, and direct communication with your office throughout the plan of care. Our clinical documentation is written to be legible and useful to a reviewer who was never in the treatment room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my own physical therapist for a work injury in New Jersey?
In New Jersey, the employer or their insurance carrier directs medical care for a work-related injury, so treatment generally needs to be authorized by them. Care obtained without authorization may not be covered. You can ask your treating physician or adjuster about being authorized to come here.

Do I need a prescription?
For an authorized workers’ compensation claim, therapy is prescribed by your authorized treating physician as part of your approved treatment plan.

How long will therapy take?
It depends on the injury, the procedure if there was one, and the physical demands of your job. You will get a clear plan at your evaluation and honest updates on your progress.

What if my pain returns after I go back to work?
Tell your treating physician and your adjuster. Returning to full duty too quickly is a common cause of re-injury, and it is better addressed early.
